Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT)
Experiencing muscle tightness or joint discomfort that doesn't seem to be going away? Learn what MAT may be able to do for you.
Interested? This video can explain the basics of MAT®
MAT® principles
Muscle Activation Techniques® can alleviate muscle and joint pain that results from engaging in daily exercise and sports activities. By combining range of motion analysis, plus a unique method for identifying and correcting muscle inhibition, MAT® offers a pathway for restoring the body’s alignment, movement, and performance.
MAT® seeks to correct muscle weakness at its source:
When a person’s body compensates or becomes misaligned as a result of inhibited muscles or inhibited muscle groups, the result can be pain or injury. Continued exercise with muscles that are inhibited can compound the body’s compensation patterns, aggravate injuries and lead to joint weakness and muscle inflammation. Re-activating these inhibited muscles allows the body to return to its natural state of alignment.
MAT’s® unique drug-free methods are adept at restoring functional movement, allowing full enjoyment of activities in a pain-free state.
How is MAT® different from massage and physical therapy?
Weak or inhibited muscles often have an influence on adjoining or opposing muscles, causing them to over-tighten as they attempt to stabilize the joint. This can lead to weakness or the development of injury or pain when stress is applied.
MAT® addresses the cause of discomfort, not just the symptoms. Conventional forms of therapy focus on muscle tightness as the primary factor leading to chronic pain and injury. MAT® considers muscle tightness as secondary in importance to muscle weakness when evaluating the causes of discomfort.
Muscle Activation Techniques® can be used to enhance your current physical therapy program or be used as stand-alone rehabilitation.
What causes muscle weakness?
Repetitive motion, stress, muscle overuse, and trauma, can all contribute to muscle inhibition and neurological weakness.
Indicators of muscle inhibition
• asymmetrical range of motion
• muscle weakness
• muscle tightness
• muscle cramping
• pain
